Following the success of the 2013 “Growing the North” Agriculture Symposium in Kapuskasing, the NeCN has once again created a special task force whose main priority is to organize an Agriculture Symposium planned for March 30 & 31 of 2017 in Kapuskasing. These symposiums are put on in an effort to increase awareness of both existing and potential agricultural developments in the area and to encourage agriculture as a viable economic engine.
The events target small and medium-sized producers and connects them with larger partners such as the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) and other organizations that are able to provide invaluable information and support regarding the maintenance and/or expansion of agricultural operations in the area.
The Symposium events and activities include developmental and informational workshops, networking opportunities, as well as a keynote speaker who provides attendees with a “big picture” to changes in the agricultural frontier and provide inspiration to all to continue “Growing the North”. At the last symposium we had the following speakers and anticipate having the same high quality standard this year:
- Mr. Ron Bonnett, President of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture and member of the World Farmers’ Organization;
- Laurier Guillemette, Kapuskasing Councilor and Northern agricultural activist;
- Mike Milinkovich, Mayor of Black River-Matheson and Northern agricultural activist; and
- Alan Spacek, Mayor of Kapuskasing, President of FONOM and Northern agricultural activist.
