The forest industry has been, and continues to be, a vital component to the Northern economy. This industry has sustained the livelihood of many NeCN member communities and is working hard to evolve with the rising interest of green technologies and the bio-industry.

The area has been home to some significant forestry operations such as Tembec, Abitibi Bowater, Columbia Forest Products, Grant Forest Products, Eacom and Domtar. Due to market conditions and numerous other factors the forest industry has faced some serious obstacles in the past few years, however, we are optimistic that the economic potential of our forests will continue to allow operations in the area for years to come.

According to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources’ Forest Management Plans for the area, there is potentially well over 2.5 Million m3 of forest available for biomass harvesting. Coupled with the prime location along the Highway 11 Corridor and easy access to rail, this hold great potential for long-term sustainable forestry practices.
